"Страна багровых туч" is an adventurous science fiction novel, the first major work by Soviet writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It was written between 1952 and 1957. The story follows an expedition of Earthlings at the end of the 20th century to the planet Venus. The book introduces characters from the "Zhilinsky Cycle" by the Strugatskys, such as Bykov, Yurkovsky, Dauga, and Krutikov. On Venus, an exceptionally rich deposit of ores is discovered, which is difficult and costly to extract on Earth. This deposit is named the "Uranian Golconda." Attempts to land research probes on Venus yielded no results, and after a while, communication signals ceased. Landing attempts using old-type rockets resulted in the pilots' deaths.
